The Pro-life Pissing Contest: Part 2

In part one, I covered the Mark Shea type, who profess that pro-lifers have to focus on every issue at once, because reasons. And if they don’t, they are not pro-life. Which makes them evil or something.

Now onto the polar opposite side, The All Or Nothings, which claims the only way abortion can be stopped is via outlawing it. Sorry, I don’t have a poster child for this one. I’m sure there probably is one, but I don’t tend to run with people in those circles.

This side also advocates for government intervention, except they look toward a legislative solution. A solution that involves overturning Roe v Wade through judicial means or by changing the constitution. They will not settle for anything less than completely outlawing abortion.

If there is a bill up for a vote that would eliminate 99.9% of all abortions, they would not support it. Nothing less than 100% ban on abortion is good enough.

Outlawing abortion is a good end goal, but it’s not fair to the children or their parents to do nothing to support the reduction of abortions through other means until that happens.

I have terrible news for the All Or Nothings. When you take that approach, what you will get is nothing.

Both of these types want government intervention. Anything less is not good enough and anyone who advocates for something more flexible or practical are just not pro-life.

There is another type that I run into quite frequently. I’ll call them the “bootstrappers.” These people profess to be pro-life, but their concept of pro-life is similar to the All or Nothings, except on a more personal level. Keep your pants on and you wouldn’t have a problem (that’s kinda obvious). If someone doesn’t keep their pants on, well they deserve to suffer the consequences of their actions with no outside help. They got themselves into the mess, they should get themselves out.

These are the people who scream at people outside of abortion clinics. And are disruptive. They are never happy with anything other pro-lifers are doing, especially if those people advocate for helping the women.

Sigh. Yeah. These are the type the pro-abortion side point to when screaming about the evil pro-lifers.

There are combinations of these three types, but these tend to be the largest loudest groups that I have experience with.

Apparently, these people didn’t get the memo that we’re all fighting on the same side. There is enough room for everyone to have a part.

In a war, everyone can’t be calvary or archers or

Thankfully, the largest group of pro-lifers that I encounter aren’t loud or obnoxious. They don’t attack people on their own side. They get off their ass and step in where needed. If that means buying diapers for a family the entire time the kid is in them they do that. They take guardianship of a child during the adoption process so that adoption can go smoother, they do that. They lend a listening ear, they clean toilets, give rides, donate money, provide food and supplies that are needed. They refer friends to agencies and charities that can help them.

And they do all of this because they are pro-life, not for any recognition, not to tell others how special they are, or how they exercise their pro-life mission is wrong. They don’t name call. They don’t backstab or bicker over petty things.

If you want to be pro-life, be that kind of pro-life. Do what needs to be done to move society away from abortion. Whether that is donating funds to pregnancy resource centers or donating time. It may be lobbying to get abortion laws changed or programs added to help those in need.

Or heck, it may be just spreading the word about the places that help families (It isn’t just women that are dealing with unexpected pregnancies. It is boyfriends, husbands, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles and grandparents). Be pro-life in your actions, not just your words.
