I got hooked on this book when I was reading it for my One Page Podcast. I previously reviewed Chasing Freedom by Marina. Once again she delivers a good story with characters that you’ll care about.
As a paralegal by day, I was rooting for the government at first. I’ve seen the terrible things that drug addictions do to people. And promoting drug use makes me cringe.
I won’t spoil the surprise, but let me say this is no ordinary drug. And by all means lets have everyone become a user.
The story revolves around Kevin, a dealer, and his girlfriend, Lilly, and their struggles in the overbearing world they live in. Lilly is new to the criminal side of life and has to work with the people damaged by re-education centers and an ex-girl friend to rescue Kevin after he is captured. And they both have to learn to trust each other in order to have a somewhat normal life.
The one thing that I love about Marina’s writing is her characterizations. The people feel real and have the same basic worries that anyone might given the situation. It makes it easy to step into their shoes and experience what they are.
And the situations where the criminal is being led through the streets, being yelled at and having disgusting things thrown at him, could have been ripped out of any history book.
This is a must read for anyone who wanted 1984 to have a happier ending.
