Why Can’t You Just Leave Me Alone?

One thing about fiction writing is that there are generally far more ideas than time to write them all. I am currently working on finishing up my first novel, Path of Angels and have been throwing around several other ideas. I usually make a few notes and forget about them.

With most ideas, it ends there.  They are perpetually scraps of ideas in with a bunch of other scraps of ideas that never make it into a story.

Then there are a few. The ideas that won’t leave me alone. They occupy space in my thought where they plot and plan ways to keep me up at night. They prod me to do research that I had no intention of doing.

That is what is happening currently. An idea has taken on a life of it’s own. What was just a random thought for a story I might do with a co-author has pushed it’s way to the forefront demanding my attention.

All I want to do is be able to sleep at night and not wake up an hour after laying down with backstory and character details and plot details running through my head. I don’t want to be driving along and seeing setting details jump out at me. I don’t want to be trying to work and have characters interrupting my concentration.

Why can’t they just leave me alone?
