It\u2019s about an Olympic snowboarder dealing with his new fame. The main characters find themselves involved in a mystery set in the abandoned gold mine. Take me out with the crowd . . .\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Uhh . . . what? I slap at the alarm.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The tune continues. Not the alarm.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Through squinted eyes I search the grey shadows of my bedroom. The music seems to be\u00a0coming from my desk.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Sam.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Note to self: Kill him later.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Ten-year- old little brothers and cell phones don\u2019t mix. Sam\u2019s always messing with my\u00a0settings. Ringtones are apparently his newest discovery. At least I was spared the total\u00a0humiliation of anyone from school hearing it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Before the singer begins to call the strikes, I stumble out of bed and lunge toward my\u00a0desk, but manage to slam my toe into the chair. Grimacing, I yank my phone from its charger. As\u00a0I answer it with one hand, I grab my throbbing toe with the other and hop back to bed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cWhat?\u201d I grunt as I flop onto my mattress.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cSophie?\u201d chirps my best friend.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cKate . . . I was asleep. What do you want?\u201d I don\u2019t know why I ask. I already know what\u00a0she\u2019s calling about.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cWhat are you going to wear today?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">It\u2019s too early for this again. \u201cI already told you five times yesterday, I. . . don\u2019t. . . .know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cCome on, it\u2019s the first day of school. We\u2019re finally juniors. We\u2019ve been looking forward\u00a0to this for like \u2014 forever! How can you not be excited? Today\u2019s our chance to meet him.\u201d She\u00a0finally stops for a breath.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cJoy,\u201d I mutter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cSoph, you\u2019re being irrational.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cIrrational? What are you, a shrink?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cHey, don\u2019t change the subject. This is going to be the best year ever. Come on, you\u2019re\u00a0usually as excited as I am. Don\u2019t you remember in fifth grade when we met early before school\u00a0so we could braid each other\u2019s hair?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cI remember.\u201d I say pulling the phone further from my ear. Her bubbliness is too much to\u00a0take.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cWhat about seventh grade when we did extra chores and earned enough money to buy\u00a0matching outfits?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cWe looked like dorks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cAnd then before ninth grade when we stayed up all night texting each other?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cI fell asleep in class.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cCome on, Grumpy, I know your inner excitement is hiding in there somewhere.\u201d She\u00a0sounds like she\u2019s about to burst into a cheer at any moment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cWhat\u2019s the purpose of this trip down memory lane?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cTo help you remember you love going back to school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">She\u2019s right, which I hate to admit. The first day of school is usually one of my favorite\u00a0days of the year. Not today though. This one is going to be very different. This one I\u2019m dreading.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cSo, what are you going to wear?\u201d she probes, her decibel level increasing. \u201cWe need to\u00a0look good when we finally meet him. First impressions. . .\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cGood-bye Kate.\u201d I interrupt as I hang up grumbling.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Falling back asleep is probably impossible now, but I\u2019m determined to try. I burrow deep\u00a0beneath my covers hoping to avoid the dread of this day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">What do I care what \u201che\u201d thinks of me? He\u2019s an arrogant jerk. And because of him I\u2019m\u00a0completely broke, spent a week of my summer break grounded, and nearly lost my precious car.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I ponder how my opinion of him has changed over the last few months. Eight months ago\u00a0I had never even heard of Jake Taylor. No one had. Then came the Winter Olympics. Amazing\u00a0how such an awesome international event could end up ruining my junior year of high school.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hey, Mischa here.
